Espada 'y' Daga Drill

Here is a simple training drill to help you to manoeuvre correctly with the stick and daga. Practice swaying forwards and back from your lead leg to your back leg as this is vital for the change of range when using a stick which requires a medium to long range and then using a daga which needs a shorter range to reach your opponent. And importantly you are learning how to pass the stick and daga without cutting yourself.

1
Starting in an open guard
2
Roof block the no.1 strike whilst checking with daga hand on oponents attacking hand

3
Latch onto opponents stick with one or two fingers to prevent pull back and strike straight down to attackers head to prevent him from evading strike
4
Following completely through with strike taking everything that gets in it's way

5
Return immediately with a strike back up, again hitting anything in it's path. Ensure you are still latched to attackers stick.
6
Follow through with strike whilst maintaining a safe range

7
Chamber in a closed guard in preperation for a backhand strike
8
Lifting daga hand briefly, allow stick to pass in front of your daga hand and attackers stick maintaining a guard and picking up stick again with daga hand quickly

9
Return with a strong backhand shot to opponents body/ribs
10
Shift weight forward onto lead leg as stick passes to close the range, enabling daga hand to reach with a stab to the body

11
As attacker thrusts the daga hand towards you, lean your weight onto your back leg to maintain a safe range from the daga and use stick to parry the outside of the daga hand (This can also be blocked on the inside as an alternative)
12
Use your index finger and thumb like a pincer to grab your attackers daga hand making sure your thumb is underneath his wrist with your daga on top of the wrist. Use traingular footwork o step out to the right

13
Continue to strike your opponent.

The next progression from here would be to manoeuvre inside and outside both your opponents feeding arms and to eventually apply disarms to the stick and daga as you pick them up and control them with the daga hand. And then free playing the techniques you have learnt.
